Apply For a Home
Were glad you're thinking about applying for a Habitat house. One wonderful aspect of Habitat for Humanity is that it builds more than houses. It builds homes, lives and communities. We hope this page will answer some of your questions about what it means to become a Habitat family.
How are Homeowners Chosen?
Habitat uses three criteria to select families for our homeownership program: need for adequate housing, the ability to pay for that housing, and the willingness to partner with Springfield/Eugene Habitat for Humanity in this process.
Need:
A. You must have lived and/or worked within the service area covered by this affiliate for at least a year. Our service are can be viewed on the 'about us' section of this web site.
B. You will be considered for a Habitat home if your present housing is inadequate in some way and you are unable to obtain adequate housing through other conventional means. Some potential inadequacies are that the house is to small for your family or there are physical problems that make the structure unsafe or unhealthy to live in.
C. You will be considered for our program if your total income is between 30%-60% of the median family income as established by HUD. The 2008 guidelines are listed below:
|

Minimum Income 30% of Med. |

If your income is within this range, you may be considered to become a Habitat partner!
Ability to Pay:
Since you will actually be buying your home from Habitat, you must demonstrate your ability to pay the monthly mortgage payment. This payment will include not only the mortgage payment but the payment for real estate taxes and insurance. This requires satisfactory credit, a good payment history on monthly debts and no bankruptcies or foreclosures in the past four years.
Willingness to Partner with Habitat:
When selected, you become a "Partner Family" in the Habitat movement. Your assistance in constructing your home and the homes of others is called "sweat equity", and may include clearing the lot, painting, helping with construction, providing food to volunteers, or working in the Habitat office. FAMILIES WITH TWO OR MORE ADULTS (individuals 18 years or older) are required to perform 500 hours. A minimum of 250 of these hours must be performed by the immediate Partner Family. Volunteers, friends, and relatives of the family may contribute up to 250 hours. SINGLE ADULT FAMILIES WITH OR WITHOUT CHILDREN are required to perform a minimum of 400 hours. Two hundred (200) hours may be contributed by volunteers, friends and relatives of the family.
How does the process work?
After a family submits an application it is reviewed by the Family Selection Committee. After they are satisfied that the family meets the criteria they recommend the family to the Board of Directors. When a family is chosen by the Board as a partner family their name goes on a waiting list and they begin working on their "sweat equity' hours. After 200 hours have been completed the Board of Directors will assign the family to a site and the process of building the home begins. It can take from 1-2 years to complete the process.
No Favoritism:
The family selection process is impartial. Neither age, sex race, marital status or religion play a part in the choice. We are looking for people living in inadequate housing, who are unable to buy a home of their own by any other means.
